After John graduated from Cambridge Veterinary School, he worked for six years in small animal practice before returning to Cambridge University as University Assistant Surgeon for four years. He then moved to Liverpool University as a Lecturer in Small Animal Surgery and became Head of the Division of Small Animal Studies. John became a Fellow of the RCVS in 1993 and Diplomate of the ECVS in 1997. Since 1999, he has worked in private referral practice, and was until recently the National Surgical Lead for the referral division of IVC Evidensia. John is a former Chair of both the BSAVA Congress Programme Committee and Congress Committee and was a Junior Vice President of the BSAVA.
